Situation
A technician fixes the company’s own machine, or works for a customer.
Recommendation
Internal jobs start from an asset Work Order and are never billed; external jobs must have a payer.
Why
Job purpose is declared at creation. Internal jobs post parts to maintenance expense with a mandatory cost center and never produce an Invoice. External jobs need a customer, customer equipment, a Service Order or a contract. One ticket has one execution path: an FS job or a Work Order. Customer-owned assets are not depreciated and get no internal jobs.
Steps
- Company machine broken: create an asset Work Order and dispatch Field Service from it.
- Customer work: create an external job with a customer or paying source.
- Check the cost center on internal jobs.
- Close the job; the Work Order becomes ready to complete.
Avoid
- Create a job without a customer and treat it as internal.
- Create both an FS job and a Work Order for one ticket.
