Authoring courses and learning paths

A course is the unit of training; a learning path chains courses into a program (e.g. new-hire onboarding). Both are built once and reused across enrolments.

When to use

Use this when you need to create training that employees can take on their own: an onboarding course, a compliance module, or a program of several courses. Build once, then enrol many people and let progress and certificates follow.

Before you start

  • Permissions: courses:read to browse; courses:write to author courses and lessons; lms_paths:write for learning paths.
  • Toggle people.lms_sequential_path_enforcement (default off): when on, a learner cannot record progress on a course until the previous one in the path is complete.
  • Toggle people.lms_quiz_pass_required (default off): a course cannot be completed until the learner has a passing quiz score.
  • SCORM and xAPI packages are supported.

Create a course

Go to LMS → Courses (/lms/courses) and click New Course. Add modules by type — video, document, SCORM package, or inline content — and arrange them in order.

Add a knowledge check

Attach an assessment (see below) as a module to gate progress or confirm understanding before completion.

Build a path

Go to LMS → Paths (/lms/paths) and sequence multiple courses into a learning path. Set whether courses must be taken in order and whether the path is mandatory.

Publish

Publish the course or path to the Catalog so it becomes discoverable and enrollable.

Course lifecycle

When a learner completes a course, XBuddy marks the enrollment complete, updates the linked competencies in the Skills Matrix, checks in a linked OKR key result, awards points and badges, and issues the certificate if automatic issue is on.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Add competencies to the course so completion updates the skills matrix.
  • Use a path for anything with an order, such as onboarding.
  • Preview the course as a learner before publishing.
  • Use Content Library for shared documents and Market Courses for external catalogs instead of recreating them.
