Opening & closing a session
A session is a cashier’s shift on a drawer. Opening records the starting cash float; closing counts the drawer and reconciles it against expected cash from the session’s transactions.
When to use
Open a session at the start of every cashier shift and close it at the end. The session is what lets you prove the cash in the drawer matches the sales.
Before you start
- Permission:
pos:useto open and trade; closing, float movements and reconciliation are management actions (pos:manage). Sessions are listed at/pos/sessions. - Data scope (own / team / all) decides which sessions you can see.
- Know your opening float before you start.
Open a session
Go to POS → Sessions → Open Session, enter the opening cash float, and start. The Terminal is now live for this cashier.
Trade during the shift
All sales are attached to the open session. Cash in/out movements (e.g. petty payouts) are recorded for reconciliation.
Close and reconcile
At shift end, open POS → Sessions, choose Close, and enter the counted cash. XBuddy shows the expected vs. counted difference (over/short) and locks the session.
Add or withdraw cash mid-shift
Use the float actions on the session to record cash put into or taken out of the drawer (for example a petty payout). These movements are included in the expected-cash calculation and are posted to Accounting.
Review the session summary
Open the session detail to see sales, payments by method and the expected cash before you count. After closing, the reconciliation is saved on the session.

Statuses
| Status | Meaning | Who moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Open | The cashier is trading; sales attach to this session. | Cashier opens it with a float. |
| Closed | Drawer counted, over/short recorded, session locked. | Cashier or shift supervisor closes it. |
Tips & common mistakes
- Count the drawer before pressing Close; the expected figure is opening float + cash sales − payouts.
- Record every payout or top-up as a float movement — unrecorded cash shows up as over/short.
- One cashier, one open session: do not share a session between people if you want clean accountability.
- A closed session cannot be reopened for trading; open a new one.
